The box office results are in and the sequel to the widely popular Divergent, Insurgent has taken over the top spot with over $54.6 million in North America and over $100 million worldwide.

The Hollywood Reporter added that Sean Penn released a new action film, The Gunman but it under performed, only making $5 million domestically. The Gunman came in fourth place at the domestic box office, coming in just ahead of Liam Neeson's Run All Night.

Insurgent was released in large format theaters and in 3D, which might have helped it increase ticket sales. Deadline reported that despite an impressive weekend at the box office, Insurgent, will make less than Divergent but only by a small margin.

The sequel sees the return of Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller and Kate Winslet but features a new director from Divergent, Robert Schwentke.
