Kendrick Lamar has taken over the music charts with his latest release To Pimp a Butterfly. Butterfly has reached the No. 1 spot on the U.K. charts, dethroning Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour off of the top spot.

Butterfly was in close competition with Sam Smith's album, it only out sold it by 572 units.

Contact Music reported that the album was released on March 16th on iTunes and Spotify which was almost a week in advance of the original release date of March 23rd.

Lamar recently broke the record for most streaming of an album in a day on Spotify, Butterfly was listened to over 9.6 million times. Lamar took the record away from Michael Buble, who held the record with 9.5 million streams with his Christmas album.

The album has received positive reviews in the U.K. and in the United States. The Guardian called the album ambitious and a "overwhelming reflection of its multifaceted complexity.”
