Two days ago, Kevin Smith started word on Mallrats 2 where it didn't exist before when he ended a tweet with "I smell a rat..." After a mere couple days of speculation, Smith finally stopped being cryptic and officiated the sequel is on his upcoming schedule.
In an interview with Tuscon's Rock 102 KFMA, found on Variety, Smith said for the first time Mallrats 2 is coming. Not only is it on Smith's to-do list, but it's already "half-scripted right now and we're pulling our loot together... We've got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we're going to be shooting."
Smith says he has a "cool idea" for a sequel, and a lot of investors who are saying "do it," so he'll push through it once he finishes up, as he mentioned earlier, Clerks III, Hit Somebody and Moose Jaws. That's quite a few movies, especially for a filmmaker who thought he'd retire just a couple years ago. But the man is inspired, and he has fans who eat up his work like kibble, so it's great to hear he'll please them with a bountiful amount of gifts these next couple years.
"It kind of came out of nowhere," Smith continues. "Lately I've been doing this thing where I'm like 'Do you want to do what's good for your career or do you just want to have fun?' Nobody's clamoring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It's been like 20 years."
Additionally, it's been confirmed Clerks III films in Philadelphia when it rolls in front of cameras in May, as an extras casting call reports from The Greater Philadelphia Film Office. As the tweet also revealed, he then has a quick turnaround when he films Hit Somebody from September to December. February 2016 sees Moose Jaws gears up production, and now, one year after he filmed Clerks III, he'll make the first sequel to his sophomore film we now know.
Smith also noted in a Facebook post after his earlier tweet he plans to make Anti-Claus while he also makes Moose Jaws. Still no word on Helena Handbag, though, or the horror anthology he's attached to, Holidays.
None of these mentioned films are Smith's next, though, as Yoga Hosers, the second part of his True North Trilogy following last year's Tusk, comes to theaters sometime later this year.
