Cannes Film Festival, the biggest film festival in the world, and Mad Max: Fury Road, one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, just got together. The festival announced the new Mad Max premieres out-of-competition during the May festival.
Although announced by Cannes representatives, Variety revealed the details on the selection. The official line-up for Cannes comes out on April 16, but they decided to reveal their selection of the Warner Bros. release early.
While speculation suggested Mad Max: Fury Road would come to Cannes on opening night on May 13, the festival cleared their second day for special screening of the feature a day before its May 15 release. This re-imagined sequel, which finds series director George Miller at the helm but Tom Hardy replacing original star Mel Gibson, is the first Mad Max film since 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderome.
The screening of this action sequel continues Mad Max's history at Cannes. The original Mad Max screened for market buyers back in 1979. This will, however, be the first time Miller appears at the film festival.
Headed by this year's presidents Joel and Ethan Coen, the Cannes Film Festival runs from May 13-24.
