Netflix took a huge step forward in their distribution process when they bought the distribution rights to Cary Fukunaga's Beasts of No Nation, with intentions to release it both in theaters and on their platform at the same time. Although Netflix only had intentions to have it released in select theaters, turns out major theaters are not OK with housing the new movie in their theaters.

AMC, Regal, Cinemark and Carmike Cinemas, the four largest exhibitors in the country, have refused to premiere Beasts of No Nation in their establishments, according to Variety. The reason for the boycott is because the theater chains do not want to house films that don't honor a 90-day delay between theatrical release and home entertainment release.

The reason for the limited theater release is primarily so Beast of No Nation can qualify for an Oscar consideration for nominations and awards in next year's ceremony. This kind of disapproving statement is not new for theater chains, as they offered a similar disdain this fall when Netflix attempted to work with the Weinstein Company and IMAX locations to release their Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel. Although, should they get Oscar nominations, this would not be the first time, as Netflix was featured for the first time in the recently past Oscar race for their documentary Virunga.

Even if these theaters say no, however, several different theaters in New York, California and Texas, including the Alamo Drafthouse, have agreed to show the movie in their locations. Insiders tell Variety there are potentially 200-250 theaters which will show Beasts of No Nation. Different theaters are open to the movie thanks to Fukunaga's success directing all of True Detective's first season and actor Idris Elba headlining the film, which gives it at least a mild following. It's sorta like The Interview all over again, isn't it?

It was just earlier this week when Netflix acquired Beast of No Nations for $12 million after WME Global showcased the film to several different potential buyers. Above all else, this new mold should create an engage a revolutionary new way awards-favorite movies come to viewers across the country.

In addition to Netflix, Amazon also previously announced plans to release theaterical films. In addition to Beast of No Nations, Netflix also has several other movies purchased and being produced at the moment, including new films by Adam Sandler and the Duplass brothers, as well as a new Pee-Wee Herman film, just to name a few.
