Authorities said that newlyweds and their two cousins drowned Sunday while swimming in the Dominican Republic.

The Associated Press noted that Civil Defense Director Amado Avila said the four victims were swept away in the currents at Playa Macao near the resort community of Punta Cana. They were identified as Kajal and Kush Patel of Philadelphia, and their cousins Jay and Shivang Patel, who all ranged in age from 27 to 30.

When the female victim got caught in some rough water and needed assistance, the men went to help her and that is when they too were swept away. One of the men was pulled from the water, but died before getting to a hospital.

WPVI reported that Dominican authorities said the victims were swimming in a prohibited area, however, the family said that there were no such signs posted.

"They didn't have any signs, no rules or regulations, and no help. They had to wait for an ambulance for almost an hour and half to get the rescue there," Sumant Patel said.

The newlyweds were married in November and have a 2-month-old son who was with the family on the trip.
