Authorities have said that a plane carrying 148 people has crashed in the French Alps.

The Associated Press reported that the Germanwings Airbus A320, which was bound for Dusseldorf, Germany, took off from the Barcelona Airport Tuesday morning. The plane was carrying 142 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew.

Officials said that around 10:45 local time, one of the pilots sent out a distress signal and a few minutes later the aircraft crashed near the ski resort of Pra Loup.

BBC News noted that search and rescue teams have been dispatched to the area of the crash site, but French President Francois Hollande said there are not believed to be any survivors.

"The conditions of the accident, which have not yet been clarified, lead us to think there are no survivors," Hollande said.

Most of those on board the jet were believed to be from Germany and President Hollande called German Chancellor Angela Merkel to give his condolences.

The exact cause of the crash is not known at this time and remains under investigation.
