We've been hearing a lot about Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot lately, but one disappointment for fans is that it will be made up of an entirely new cast with no real room for the classic actors. Well, that may not necessarily be true if Sigourney Weaver has her way.
According to Screen Rant, Sigourney Weaver says she'd love to cameo in the Ghostbusters reboot. She noted that although the movie will be focused on the new characters, there would be room for some of the old cast members to pop up in small roles. "They might have us pop up as marshmallow men or something and then destroy us," she joked.
Though some of the old cast members like Ernie Hudson aren't into the reboot idea, Weaver expressed her approval of the new movie, saying she thinks it's going to be fantastic and that she can't wait to see it.
It's kind of unfortunate that the new Ghostbusters will be a total reboot, not existing within the same universe as the previous movies. If it wasn't a reboot, there would be plenty of opportunity for the old cast to return briefly as their old characters, with the original Ghostbusters pasting the torch to the new ones. But the fact that this movie assumes no other Ghostbusters movie has existed makes it difficult to have the old actors appear in anything other than fun, silly cameos, like having Bill Murray as a guy buying a hot dog in one scene or Sigourney Weaver as a librarian. Let's hope that Feig can find a more significant part for the actors who are willing to come back.
As we previously reported, Ghostbusters will be an all-female reboot starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. It will be directed by Paul Feig, known for other female driven comedies such as Bridesmaids and The Heat. Feig will be writing the script with Katie Dippold, who worked with him on the screenplay for The Heat.
The idea of a new Ghostbusters had been in talks for years, and for a while it was discussed as a proper Ghostbusters 3 featuring the original cast. However, that slowly fell apart over the years as Rick Moranis retired from acting, Harold Ramis passed away, and Bill Murray continuously expressed no interest in returning. Dan Aykroyd is still championing the idea though, saying that he still hopes we'll see a proper Ghostbusters 3 one day, as we previously reported.
Ghostbusters will open on July 22, 2016.
