Thousands of flights at several airports were canceled Thursday due to the latest snowstorm to hit the Northeast.
According to the flight-tracking website Flightaware.com, 4,525 flights have been canceled nationwide and another 2,800 have been delayed, which accounts for about 20 percent of the country’s flights.
Heading into the evening as the snow is still falling in the region, those numbers could rise.
The Associated Press noted that so far the storm has dumped 9 inches in Western Maryland, 6 inches in and around Baltimore and 3 inches in our nation’s capital. And, it is not done yet as a winter storm warning is still in effect through Thursday night. As a result, around 1,000 flights out of Reagan National Airport, Dulles International Airport and Baltimore’s airport have all had cancellations.
Additionally, it was a very rough day at LaGuardia, where earlier a plane skidded off the runway and shut parts of it down. Operations there now, like at most airports, are sparse.
For Philadelphia meanwhile, about half of all the day’s flights have been grounded.
More bad news for travelers is that many flights for Friday at some of those major airports have already been canceled.
