Considering that Toy Story 3 had such a perfect ending to Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story trilogy, last fall’s announcement that a fourth movie was coming through many fans for a loop. But thankfully, the team at Pixar knows where they want to take the story of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.
Pixar president Jim Morris did an interview with Disney Latino back in December, but it was noticed by Slash Film.
In it, Morris says that director John Lasseter and the writers understand that the end of TS3 was perfect, so they don’t plan on making the film directly related to the main trilogy. It sounds like TS4 will be more like an expansion of the specials Pixar makes for ABC.
“The third movie ended in a beautiful way and completed a trilogy,” Morris said. “I think this movie is not part of this trilogy. It is a separate story, which in turn I do not know if will be continued. Never begin a project with that in mind.”
Later in the interview, Morris hinted that the film will actually be more like a romantic comedy that “will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children.”
That is definitely a new direction for Toy Story, which has been obsessed with growing up and growing out of toys. Andy had to learn how to let go of Woody and Woody had to let go of Andy. Now that this idea has played out already, it makes sense to avoid it in a new film. Otherwise, it really sounds like we’re treading over the same ground for the sole purpose of making more money.
Disney announced in November 2014 that Pixar is working on TS4. The new film will be directed by Lasseter, from a story by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and TS3 director Lee Unkrich. Rashida Jones and her frequent collaborator, Will McCormack, is writing the script.
