At the start of “Kimmy Goes On A Date!,” it looks like Kimmy has become Cinderella and has her Prince Charming. Her Prince, of course, is Charles (Andrew Ridings), Buckley’s tutor who does all of his homework. But when she goes into her room, it looks suddenly like the bunker. Oh no! It’s a nightmare. In reality, she’s on top of Titus, choking him.
When Titus wakes up, he realizes that Kimmy needs someone to talk to. So, that’s her mission for the episode - get some real human contact. Meanwhile, Titus has his own job - keeping track of ‘90s sayings Kimmy uses that no one else does any more. OK, his real mission in Episode Three is getting a new headshot, because his old one is too outdated.
After Kimmy is done walking Jacqueline's dog with a decorative anus, she finds Charles doing Buckley’s new homework assignment, a family tree. While they have Mr. Voorhes’ side done, they have nothing available for Jacqueline. Cut to a flashback, which reveals that Jacqueline is actually a Native American from South Dakota! Since only blondes with blue eyes can be successful, Jacqueline decided in 1992 that the only way to get People’s Sexiest Man Alive, Nick Nolte, to marry her is by heading to New York.
Kimmy’s lack of a cell phone keeps the family distracted though and that reminds Xanthippe that they still know nothing about Kimmy. She says the weirdest things and yet, Jacqueline’s OK with her. Kimmy still doesn’t want them to know that she’s an Indiana Mole Woman, so she tells them that her last name is “Smith” and that she’s from Middletown, Ohio (which conveniently exists). Obviously, Xanthippe is going to spend most of the season trying to figure out who Kimmy really is.
Later, Jacqueline sets up Kimmy on a date. Even though she told Titus that getting a lover is “gross,” Kimmy decides to accept the opportunity. Sadly, Jacqueline sets her up with Grant (John McMartin), who is a senile old man. At first, Kimmy thinks this is great, because he’s someone to talk to, but she tries to escape her second date when she realizes he has no idea what she’s talking about.
Meanwhile, sparks are starting to fly between Charlie and Kimmy.
She makes it back safely to Jacqueline's after Grant chases her and Jacqueline. Xanthippe still can’t handle Kimmy’s weirdness, but Jacqueline sticks up for her. Kimmy reminds Jacqueline a bit of herself when she first came to New York. Jacqueline hasn’t completely left behind her Native American roots, as we see that she still has her grandma’s necklace.
For Titus, he spent the episode trying to convince Lillian that he didn’t really have money, even though he was wearing a new suit. He tells her that he’s really going to a funeral, which turns out to be for a Korean man. After spending a day with Titus, Lillian realizes that Titus must share his skills with the world. Titus reveals that he has money, but as he hands it to her, a thief steals it... because New York.
The best part of “Goes On A Date!” was the news that Jacqueline isn’t just a carbon copy of Jane Krakowski’s 30 Rock character. Since Tina Fey and company have kept the number of characters to a minimum here, it gives her a chance to give Krakowski a new and more intricate character to play with.
