Marvel’s first Avengers movie opened at over $200 million in 2012 and Avengers: Age of Ultron is already expected to beat that, based on very early tracking.

Back in May 2012, The Avengers set the all-time record opening weekend with $207.4 million. The film wound up finishing with $623.3 million domestically and $1.5 billion worldwide.

Marvel and Disney can’t be blamed for expecting even bigger numbers for Age of Ultron. Fandango said today that sales for the new film are “through the roof.” It is already “far outselling” the first Avengers during the 2012 film’s pre-sale phase.

It’s already looking like Age of Ultron will be able to set a new record for opening weekends and the film doesn’t hit theaters until May 1. There will also be early showings the day before, which will also boost the film’s opening. It’s also coming out in IMAX and in 3D.

Since the first Avengers movie, Marvel films have continued to score successful openings. Still, the only one that came close to The Avengers was Iron Man 3, which opened to $175 million.

Anything under $200 million for Age of Ultron will be a disappointment for Disney, but obviously they don’t have to worry about it.
