Note to all actors, actresses and filmmakers walking the red carpet at Cannes for the first time in May: don’t take a selfie. Festival director Thierry Fremaux really, really doesn’t like them.
During the press conference to announce the 2015 festival line-up, Fremaux said that he won’t ban selfies, but he wants to put a “limitation” on them.
“We are waging a campaign to slow down the contemporary practice of selfies on the red carpet and the steps,” Fremaux said, reports The Guardian. “Beyond what we think, it’s a practice that’s often extremely ridiculous and grotesque.”
Incoming festival president Pierre Lescure joked, “It’s always the ugliest picture of you anyway.”
They didn’t go into details about how they would enforce the selfie limit, but they explained that it is important that stars keep moving on the red carpet. They can delay festival screenings and events if everyone has to pause and take pictures of themselves.
Cannes isn’t the only major event to frown on the selfie craze. The organizers behind the Coachella and Lollapalooza music festivals even banned selfie sticks.
This year’s festival line-up will likely draw plenty of Hollywood stars. The films include Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees with Matthew McConaughey, Todd Haynes’ Carol with Cate Blanchett and Woody Allen’s Irrational Man with Emma Stone.
The festival runs from May 13-24.
