If you need proof that characters can be interpreted in different ways, look no further than the first good photo of Jared Leto’s The Joker for Suicide Squad. Sure, he’s playing the same character that Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for, but you couldn’t tell just by this picture.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the Joker’s first appearance in a Batman comic, Suicide Squad director David Ayer tweeted a photo of Leto as the crazy criminal mastermind. He has tattoos all over his arms and chest and even has the word “deranged” tattooed on his forehead. It is clear that he had some kind of chemical accident, since there are marks around his lips and eyes. He is also only wearing one purple glove and has green hair.

Technically, we have seen a bit of Leto as The Joker before. Back on April 9, Ayer posted a blurry image of Leto holding a camera as a reference to The Killing Joke. A Snapchat image of Leto with green hair and red lips also surfaced.

We won’t get to see Leto in action until Aug. 5, 2016, when Suicide Squad hits theaters. The film centers on a group of DC Comics villains who are assigned by the government to go on dangerous missions.

The cast also includes Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Scott Eastwood, Common and Adeleke Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
