Chipotle Mexican Grill said that it has completed the removal of all genetically modified ingredients from the food on its menu.
Bloomberg News noted that while the Food and Drug Administration has said that GMOs are safe, the company decided on removing them all together.
“There is a lot of debate about genetically modified foods,” said Co-CEO Steve Ells. “Though many countries have already restricted or banned the use of GMO crops, it’s clear that a lot of research is still needed before we can truly understand all of the implications of widespread GMO cultivation and consumption. While that debate continues, we decided to move to non-GMO ingredients.”
The New York Times was the first to report the completion of the GMO-phase out for the Denver-based chain.
In 2013, Chipotle became the first chain restaurant to make customers aware that some products contained genetically modified organisms. Two years later, several restaurants and grocers including Whole Foods and Walmart have vowed to follow suit.
