Chris Pratt has very quickly become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, starring in Guardians of the Galaxy, the upcoming Jurassic World, and even having his name thrown around as the next Indiana Jones. Now Universal has nabbed the rights to a new Pratt led action-adventure film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has purchased The Real McCoy. The film will be based on the real life bootlegger Bill McCoy.
During the prohibition era, McCoy was known for smuggling alcohol from the Bahamas on to the East Coast. He took pride in his products being uncut and clean, which is often said to be the inspiration behind the phrase "the real McCoy," meaning the real thing or genuine. McCoy quickly became an enemy of organized crime and of the United States government, and was eventually captured in 1923 after refusing to surrender and attempting to flee from the Coast Guard.
We don't know a whole lot of other details about the plot of the film besides that, but the idea came from producer Tom McNulty. He pitched the idea to writer Bill Dubuque, whose only current credit is the 2014 Robert Downey Jr. led The Judge. Chris Pratt loved the idea and agreed to join. Apparently Warner Bros. and Universal were in a bidding war over rights to the movie, which Universal finally won today.
This is yet another action-adventure film that Chris Pratt is attached to. He's also starring in the upcoming Cowboy Ninja Viking, as we previously reported, playing a man with Multiple Personality Disorder with the abilities of a cowboy, a ninja and a viking. He'll also be starring in the remake of The Magnificent Seven and the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, both of which are expected to hit theaters in 2017.
