After a day of looting, violence and riots broke out in the streets of Baltimore, a state of emergency has been issued and a curfew will go into effect Tuesday evening.

Good Morning America noted that in response to Monday’s violence Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said that a citywide curfew would be in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday and last through May 4.

"This is not a lawless city," Rawlings-Blake said when she made the announcement.

WBAL reported that in addition to the curfew, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan issued a state of emergency and activated the National Guard to assist law enforcement and restore order in Charm City.

"Today, we're dealing with stopping the violence and protecting the people," Hogan said Tuesday.

As previously reported, protests have been taking place in Baltimore ever since the death of Freddie Gray, who was arrested and suffered an acute spinal cord injury that led to a coma. He died on April 19 and was laid to rest yesterday. His family pleaded for peace and an end to the violence. However, their pleas fell on deaf ears as stores were looted, rocks and other objects were thrown at police in riot gear and several fires burned throughout the city overnight.

More than a dozen officers were injured and two were hospitalized. There has been no word on their condition at this time.
