Since critics can’t kill a franchise just with negative reviews, audiences are still getting more Transformers. Hasbro said that another movie in the franchise could be coming as soon as 2017.

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner confirmed during a conference call with investors on Monday that last month’s reports about a Transformers expanded film universe were true. Paramount has hired A Beautiful Mind writer Akiva Goldsman to put together a “writer’s room” to brainstorm ideas for future Transformers movies.

“We think there are any number of stories to be told from the brand that has been around for 30 years with amazing canon and mythology. We would expect the sequel to the Transformers movie to happen in 2017,” Goldner said, notes Entertainment Weekly.

Paramount is clearly hoping that Transformers can become its Star Wars, even though it does have Star Trek and (if the next one is a hit) Terminator.

Michael Bay’s return is also questionable. He has made it clear that he’d like to do different things and that includes the Benghazi movie 13 Hours.

The last Transformers movie, Age of Extinction was slammed by critics, but audiences around the world didn’t care. The film grossed $1.1 billion worldwide, with just $254 million of that coming from North America. The film even ended up making more China alone than in North America.
