Kevin James’ Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 didn’t win the box office this weekend, but it still pulled in audiences who just needed something to laugh at. Furious 7 kept its winning streak going though.
Universal’s Furious 7 grossed $29 million over the weekend, giving the film its third consecutive win. The film is now up to $294.4 million in North America and did cross the $1 billion mark worldwide. It is the fastest movie to do that in film history.
Coming in second was Paul Blart 2, released by Sony. According to Rentrak data, the film pulled in $24 million. That’s about what was about what was expected. It is lower than the original 2009 film’s $31.8 million opening, but much better than James’ last leading movie, Here Comes The Boom. That movie only opened to $11 million. (James was in 2013’s Grown Ups 2, but wasn’t the main draw there.)
Universal also has a hit with Unfriended, the low-budget horror movie about teens getting scared behind computer screens. The film’s good reviews and marketing powered it to a $16 million debut.
DreamWorks Animation’s Home added $10.3 million, while The Longest Ride fell hard to $6.8 million in its second weekend. Get Hard made $4.8 million, while Disney’s new nature film Monkey Kingdom opened to $4.7 million.
