In case you were really worried, yes, there will be a Furious 8. Universal had Vin Diesel make the announcement during CinemaCon in Las Vegas Thursday.
The eighth film in the Fast & Furious franchise will hit theaters on April 14, 2017. Considering that Furious 7 became the fastest movie ever to reach $1 billion, despite an April release, repeating that makes perfect sense.
Diesel has been hitting the family angle of the franchise hard during interviews for Furious 7’s release and continued that theme in Vegas. He paid tribute to Paul Walker, who died in November 2013 while Universal was still working on Furious 7.
“I swear to you and to my brother upstairs [Walker], we are going to make the best movie you’ve ever seen,” Diesel told the crowd, notes Entertainment Weekly.
The Fast & Furious franchise has been revving its engines since 2001 and the first seven films have made a combined $1.2 billion in North America alone. Worldwide, the franchise is up to $3.5 billion.
Universal also announced the release dates for the Fifty Shades of Grey sequels and set new dates for The Mummy and Pacific Rim 2.
