Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and his wife, artist Danae Stratou, said that they came under attack as they dined out at an Athens restaurant with a friend Tuesday evening.

BBC reported that the couple was pelted with glass and other objects by anarchists while at an eatery in the Exarchia district.

"Around 10 p.m. enraged youths stormed in, shouting things along the lines of 'what are you doing here, this is our area,'" said Katerina Akrivopoulou, a journalist who spoke with Varoufakis after the incident.

The restaurant is located in what is known as a working-class neighborhood and Varoufakis has been criticized for his battles with Greece’s creditors over a bailout package.

The AFP noted that after the objects started flying their way, Stratou actually tried to shield her husband from being hit.

The ministry later said that the youths were not trying to harm the couple, but rather just embarrass them.

Varoufakis has refused police protection ever since he took office last January.
