The Calbuco volcano in Southern Chile erupted for the second time in one day and the search is on for a missing hiker who disappeared shortly after the first eruption.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Chilean officials are searching for a man who hiking was last seen in the area just before Calbuco shot out smoke and ash.
"The central concern are the lives of people and for this reason we will make effort to find [him]," said Interior Undersecretary Mahmud Aleuy.
As previously reported, the volcano, which had not erupted for 42 years, finally did without warning on Wednesday.
Thousands of people were evacuated from the area around Calbuco including those in the towns of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt.
Chile’s National Service of Geology and Mining said another eruption could occur at any moment and the country’s President Michelle Bachelet gave residents warnings that the volcano could emit lava soon.
Of all Chile’s 90 active volcanos, Calbuco is considered the most dangerous.
