Authorities in Alabama have said that a man fatally shot his wife at a doctor’s office after a domestic dispute.

The Associated Press reported that the husband and suspected gunman, was arguing with his wife and followed her to a doctor’s office where he fatally shot her.

WBRC noted that the shooting occurred at Dr. Jayprakash Patel's around 9:00 Monday morning.

"The first thing she said when she came in was, 'Call the police,'" said Jeminson Police Chief Shane Fulmer.

Her husband, a former U.S. Marine, walked into the office after her and shot the woman in front of several witnesses. He then left the office and returned to his home, where police became engaged in a standoff with him.

A negotiator was able to speak with the suspect but lost contact. Police then used tear gas to get him out of the residence.

When the man surrendered, he had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was transferred to a local hospital.

The couple has one young child together who was not in the home at the time of the incident.
