Health officials said that three people, who were hospitalized in Texas, are believed to have gotten sick from a Listeria strain that is also being blamed for three deaths in Kansas.
Reuters noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the three parties fell ill after eating ice cream from a Blue Bell plant in Oklahoma, which has since been closed. They are said to have been infected sometime between 2011 and 2014. The strain was not identified though until recently.
In addition to the three deaths in Kansas, two other people were hospitalized in that state after they became sick.
As previously reported, Sabra Dipping Co. recalled 30,000 cases of hummus Thursday due to a possible Listeria contamination.
Listeria monocytogenes causes gastrointestinal symptoms including fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea abdominal pain and diarrhea. The infection can be treated with antibiotics, however, it can sometimes prove to be fatal for older adults, newborns, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.
