Authorities said that an infant was killed by a family’s pet pit bull in Dallas on Sunday when his father stepped outside the home.

WFAA reported that the attack happened when the father left the 2-month-old baby in his bouncing seat and walked outside just before 5 p.m. to turn on his sprinkler system. When he went back inside he found the dog attacking the child.

During the attack the infant’s mother walked in and tried to get the pit bull away from the baby, but she was bitten twice.

Local media reports said the father then got ahold of the dog’s neck and fatally shot the canine outside of the house.

The Dallas Morning News noted that the child, identified by the medical examiner’s office as Brayden Wilson, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The incident remains under investigation and the case has been referred to a grand jury. It is unclear at this time what and if any charges will be filed against the parents.
