Maika Monroe, who stars in the hit indie horror film It Follows, just got her first big blockbuster role. She will star as the female lead in Fox’s Independence Day 2.
Monroe is currently in talks for the big part, which would have her playing the daughter of the U.S. President, reports The Hollywood Reporter. She would be the romantic lead for Liam Hemsworth.
The other new face joining the franchise is Jessie Usher, who will likely star as the son of Will Smith’s original ID4 character. Charlotte Gainsbourg also surprisingly has a role in the film.
Smith is the only major player from the first film not returning. Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch are all returning.
Production on the new film, which is being directed by Roland Emmerich, should be starting soon. Back on April 20, actress Joey King tweeted a picture of herself with Emmerich and other producers boarding a plane. “Heading to start filming #IndependenceDay,” she wrote.
As for Monroe, she starred in It Follows, which was such a big hit that Radius-TWC ended up delaying its VOD release. Her other credits include The Bling Ring, Labor Day and The Guest.
Independence Day 2, which could be the first of two ID4 sequels, hits theaters on July 24, 2016. That’s 20 years since the release of the first film.
