While J.K. Rowling is constantly building the wizarding world of Harry Potter, she hasn’t actually written another novel about Harry’s adventures in eight years. Still, that doesn’t mean she is completely done after seven novels about Harry.
During an interview with The Today Show’s Matt Lauer, which aired this morning, Rowling said that she is not currently writing a new Harry novel. However, she stressed that she has never said that Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows will definitely be the last book in the series.
“I have always said never say ... well, not never say never," she told Lauer. "I've always said I'm not going to say I definitely won't because, because I don't see why I should say that. You know, it's my world and I might choose to step back into it. And in a way, I am stepping back into it."
Still, it doesn’t look like an eight novel on the adventures of Harry, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger is coming in the immediate future. Rowling has plenty of projects coming soon and is also concentrating on her Lumos charity for children.
One of her other projects is the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them films. They are set in Harry’s wizarding world, but Harry won’t be in them.
“I'm stepping back into that world, writing the script for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” Rowling said. “So, you know, that door is always opened to me. But I think Harry Potter 8, as in what happened next to Harry, Ron and Hermione — I don't think that's going to happen.”
She is also currently cutting her teeth as an adult novelist. Since Harry Potter ended, she’s published The Casual Vacancy and the Cormoran Strike novels. She did tell Lauer that she is hoping to write another children’s book.
“I definitely will write for children again, 'cause I love writing for kids,” she said. “So that will definitely happen, and that will sit comfortably alongside this work [with Lumos]. And maybe I'll get to read that new work to some of these children.”
The rest of Lauer’s interview with Rowling will air on Monday.
