Kraft Foods Group Inc. has announced that it will be changing the recipe of its Macaroni & Cheese Dinner to eliminate artificial colors and flavors by next year.

Reuters noted that the company announced on Monday that it would be completely revamping the popular box dinner in response to consumer demands for healthier ingredients.

"We know parents want to feel good about the foods they eat and serve their families," explained Kraft spokeswoman Lynne Galia.

The company said it will replace the synthetic colors with natural ingredients like paprika and annatto by early 2016.

Heather White, who is an executive director of the Environmental Working Group, applauded Kraft for its actions in changing up the artificial colors and flavors to reflect modern concerns and diets.

"The announcement from Kraft should be a wake-up call for other food manufacturers to take notice, go back to the drawing board, reformulate and get rid of these synthetic ingredients of concern, especially in food that is marketed to children," she said.

The move comes just one month after the company recalled thousands of cases of macaroni and cheese due to small pieces of metal found inside some of the boxes.
