Authorities in Italy have said that a man shot his lawyer, a judge and others during his bankruptcy hearing in Milan on Thursday.

The Associated Press reported that many people inside the courthouse barricaded themselves in courtrooms or offices when they heard about the gunfire.

Attorney Mirko Ricetti said he locked himself in a first-floor courtroom after hearing of the gunman.

“There was a lot of panic at the beginning when people came running toward us saying there was a person with a pistol who had been shooting," he explained.

The suspect has been identified by police as Claudio Giardiello.

The Telegraph noted that the alleged gunman shot and killed his lawyer Alberto Claris Appiani. He then allegedly fired at, but missed prosecutor Gaetano Ruta. He also reportedly shot Giorgio Erba and his nephew Davide Limongelli. Erba died from his gunshot wound and his nephew was hospitalized.

Giardiello is also believed to have fatally shot Judge Fernando Ciampi on separate floor of the courthouse.

Court officers said they did not notice a weapon on the suspect when he entered the building and there is no indication that the shootings were related to terrorism.
