Macbeth has been filmed countless times, but Justin Kurzel is hoping to earn acclaim with a new reimagining of “The Scottish Play.” He shouldn’t have much trouble, considering that his stars are Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.
The film is set to premiere at Cannes next month and the first pictures were published today by Empire. There’s a still of Cotillard and Fassbender together, and two other pictures with them individually. They show off the stunning costumes by Oscar winner Jacqueline Durran.
It is being billed as “a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war-torn medieval Scotland.”
Fassbender stars as Macbeth, who hears the prophecy that he will become king. Cotillard plays Lady Macbeth, who pushes him further to see the prophecy come true.
The film will be released by The Weinstein Company in the U.S., so you probably won’t see it in theaters until this fall so it could be up for Oscar nominations.
Fassbender was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 12 Years A Slave and is currently working on X-Men: Apocalypse. Cotillard, who is reportedly reuniting with Fassbender in Assassin’s Creed, has an Oscar for La vie en rose and was just nominated for Two Days, One Night.
