Miss Piggy is be the first woman (or pig) of the Muppet world and now she’s getting an award for it. The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum announced today that it will be honoring Kermit the Frog’s girlfriend at their awards ceremony.
The awards were established as a serious way to honor women who are the first in their fields, but it looks like they are taking a detour this year to honor a puppet. During the ceremony on Thursday, June 4, Piggy will be “interviewed” by Gloria Steinem. Kermit is also set to be in attendance to support her.
“The 2015 Sackler Center First Awards honors performer, actor, writer, and icon Miss Piggy, for more than forty years of blazing feminist trails with determination and humor, and for her groundbreaking role inspiring generations the world over,” the museum said.
“Moi is thrilled—but frankly, not surprised to be receiving this Sackler Center First Award,” Miss Piggy said in a statement. “It is truly wonderful to be celebrated and share this honor with fellow legends, role models, and pioneers of female fabulosity. We rock!”
The award follows last month’s Daily Beast piece, which called Piggy the “Gloria Steinem of the Muppet World” because of her trailblazing work and personality. After all, she is the author of a New york Times Best Seller, 1981’s Miss Piggy’s Guide to Life.
The Sackler Center First Awards began in 2012. Past honorees include Connie Chung, Julie Taymor and Anita F. Hill. Now, they get to say they won an award that’s also going to a puppet.
Piggy, Kermit and the rest of the Muppet Show gang could be returning to television in an ABC series that’s currently in development.
