Authorities have said that more than 50 people died after a Russian shipping vessel sunk at sea.
Reuters reported that the boat sank in the frigid waters of the Sea of Okhotsk off the Kamchatka peninsula. Of the 132 crew members on board at least 54 were killed.
The Telegraph noted that a rescue worker said the ship, which sank Thursday around 4 a.m. local time, went down within 15 minutes. Therefore, the captain may not have had enough time to issue a distress signal.
The boat’s captain was one of those who drowned in the icy waters.
Around 60 people were pulled safely from the sea so far and thousands of emergency rescue workers have remained in the area as they continue to search for anyone unaccounted for.
The trawler was owned by Magellan LLC and its home port is Nevelsk in Russia's Sakhalin region.
There is no word yet on what caused the ship to sink.
