Spider-Man is finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition to his appearance in Civil War, the character will be getting his own spinoff movie in 2017. Now, a new rumor reveals what the title of that movie might be.
According to Latino Review's El Mayimbe, the new Spider-Man movie will be called Spider-Man: The New Avenger.
This contradicts the previous rumor that the movie would be called Spectacular Spider-Man. The new title makes a lot of sense though in that it would differentiate it from both the previous films. Giving the movie another adjective name would probably make a lot of people think it was just a new film in the Amazing Spider-Man series. This title also obviously echoes the title of Captain America: The First Avenger, and would make it clear to everyone who doesn't keep up with movie news that Spider-Man is now part of The Avengers.
Of course, Marvel could probably also do that just by calling it Marvel's Spider-Man or something similar to that, but this works too. Considering the disappointing box office performance of the recent Spider-Man movies, especially when compared to a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Marvel really needs to make it clear that this is now part of their series. If audiences just think this is the sequel to Amazing Spider-Man 2, based on that movie's relatively disappointing performance, it probably won't do nearly as well as movies like Iron Man 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy did.
Whatever it ends up being called, Marvel's new Spider-Man film will hit theaters on July 28, 2017. The movie will be going with a younger Peter Parker than the last few films and will really emphasize the character's comedy, as we previously reported.
