Suzette Quintanilla, the sister of the late Mexican American superstar Selena Quintanilla-Perez, is defending her family’s decision to revive Selena’s music through a touring hologram show.
As previously reported, Selena’s family is planning a project called Selena The One, which could go on tour as soon as 2018, if the technology by Acrovirt LLC is ready. The announcement came just after the 20th anniversary of Selena’s death at the age of 23.
While some may think that this is all about money, Suzette insisted in an interview with Billboard that this isn’t the case. For them, it’s about introducing Selena’s music to a new generation.
“By no means is this something that’s creepy or weird,” Suzette told the magazine. “We think it’s something amazing. A lot of the new fans that did not get to experience what Selena was about hopefully will be able to get a sense of her with this new technology that’s going to be coming out.”
Suzette further explained, “It’s not about replacing Selena in any shape, way or form; it’s just something to help her legacy continue growing.”
Suzette also revealed that the family had talked with AV Concepts, the company that made the Tupac Shakur hologram that “performed” at Coachella 2012. However, they didn’t like their projection system because it was “almost cartoon-ish.”
The family will still need financial help. They are launching an Indiegogo campaign on April 16 and hope to raise $500,000.
