Steps of Doe have released On Returning and the album transcends being an average pop-inde album with whimsical vocal harmonies and complex melodies.
Steps of Doe features Keena Batti and Molly Falck. The two ladies met while studying abroad at Cambridge in England and their musical creation came out of a need to procrastinate studying. They became writing music together and both decided to move back to Los Angeles after they finished their studies, it was after this move that their focus turned to music full time.
The fact this music started because of a friendship between the two is felt in the songs. It feels organic, natural and like a musical experiment that went right. This wasn't something a studio wanted to create in order to top the charts, this was created out of love of the music.
The album opens with "Love So Fine," which showcases just how unique Steps of Doe are musically. Their harmonizes are not only complimentary but are captivating. The instruments have been chosen in a way that really frames their vocals and takes their music from just another indie act to a really unique and eccentric way.
Batti and Falck have large vocal ranges and can stand along on their own, they take turns with solos and really embrace their musical style with every note. When they come together and harmonize is when the band goes from average to incredible.
Each song transitions into the next and the album feels like a concert, not just a bunch of singles that have been put together. A variety of influences can be felt while listening to this album range from Ingrid Michaelson to The Fine Frenzy.
Stand out tracks on the album include, "Chasing Ghosts," "Down the Road," and "Bring Me Home."
