A Texas man, who shot and killed a customer at a gas station and a police officer more than a decade ago, is set to die on Thursday evening.
Reuters noted that Kent Sprouse, 42, is set to be put to death by lethal injection at 6:00 p.m. local time in Huntsville. He will be the 523rd person executed in the Lone Star State since the death penalty was reinstated back in 1976.
Texas has enough sedatives to carry out three more executions set for this month. At the moment, three others are set for May and June so officials might have to find a new supply.
The Associated Press reported that in November, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against reviewing Sprouse's case and currently, there are no last-day appeals planned.
Witnesses said that in 2002, Sprouse walked out of a convenience store and fired at 38-year-old Pedro Moreno who was pumping gas nearby. He then shot responding officer, Harry Marvin "Marty" Steinfeldt III.
Moreno died at a hospital and the officer was fatally shot in areas where he did not have a protective vest.
Sprouse’s lawyers said that he was under the influence of methamphetamines and other drugs at the time of the shootings.
