Country superstar Tim McGraw announced earlier this week that he plans on headlining a special benefit for Sandy Hook Promise, a foundation set up in the memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in 2012. While many are praising his show of support, others on Twitter are criticizing him for supporting an anti-gun group.

McGraw announced the July 17 show at the XFINITY Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut on his website Monday, with tickets going on sale today. All of the net proceeds of the event will go to Sandy Hook Promise. McGraw’s current tour openers, Billy Currington and Chase Bryant, will also perform, along with special guests that will be announced later.

“Out of this tragedy a group was formed that made a promise to honor the lives lost and turn it into a moment of transformation,” McGraw said in a statement. “Sandy Hook Promise teaches that we can do something to protect our children from gun violence. I want to be a part of that promise – as a father and as a friend.”

McGraw actually has a personal link to the tragedy. The son of his fiddle player, Dean Brown, was among the 20 students and six teachers killed.

While some of McGraw’s fans on Facebook praised him for the concert, others took to Twitter to complain, notes The Washington Post. Even the NRA initially tweeted, “Country musicians @TheTimMcGraw and@billycurrington to promote and play at gun control fundraiser,” although they later deleted the tweet.

Sandy Hook Promise’s mission does not specify that it is anti-gun. Instead, the group says its aim is to help protect children from gun violence by “engaging and empowering parents and communities with targeted prevention programs in the areas of mental wellness early-identification & intervention, social & emotional development and firearm safety & security.” In addition, the group wants to “Help our community through this tragedy by providing resources and programs that foster connection, resiliency and overall wellness.”

Here are some other negative responses to the show:
