Tim McGraw has fallen under criticism for his benefit concert for the Sandy Hook Promise but McGraw is standing behind his decision for the performance and explained that his concert is not political.

Taste of Country reported that McGraw says the Internet caused a misunderstanding regarding the concert and that the event isn't political.

According to the organization's website, The Sandy Hook Promise was founded on the principals that the goals are to protect children from "gun violence by focusing on prevention, early identification and intervention for possible mental illness, social and emotional development and firearm safety and security, as well as creating programs to help the community through the tragedy."

“I don’t put a political blanket on what I’m doing,” explained McGraw. “This is about helping people and leading with your heart. I think that that’s what I try to do, and we’re doing things [that] are earmarked for a lot of good in the community.”

As previously reported the benefit concert will be taking place on July 17th at XFinity Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut and Billy Currington will be opening for McGraw.
