Opening statements are set to begin Monday in the trial of Aurora movie theater shooter James Holmes.

NPR noted that nearly three years after the tragic evening when Holmes opened fire in a crowded movie theater, his trial will begin in Arapahoe County District Court. The defendant has plead not guilty by reason of insanity and jurors must decide his fate in the death penalty trial.

Judge Carlos Samour, who will be presiding over the case, said the trial could last several months. During that time jurors will almost certainly hear from many of the victims who were wounded and family members of those killed in the shooting. The defense will then likely continue to ask jurors the question pertaining to if any sane person would have done what Holmes did.

As previously reported, on July 20, 2012, the defendant opened fire inside the Century 16 multiplex in Aurora, Colorado during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.
Twelve people were killed and another 70 were wounded.

Holmes was arrested outside the theater shortly after the shooting.
