Authorities in Arizona said twin boys drowned Friday after their mother let go of their stroller and it rolled into a canal.
Reuters reported that Alexis Keslar was pushing her 18-month-old sons in their stroller along a canal in Yuma last week when she stopped for a moment to swat away bees. Police said that in that instant when she let go of the stroller, it rolled into the water.
The Associated Press noted that Lieutenant Don Willits said that the 26-year-old mother jumped into the canal to save her two sons Silas and Eli, but the fast-moving water swept them away. Both children were still strapped in the stroller when it fell in the water.
Emergency responders had city workers lessen the amount of water flowing into the canal and began searching for the boys. They were found after about an hour and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The medical examiner’s office ruled the deaths as accidental drownings. Police said it was a tragic accident and that Keslar did what she could to try and save her children.
"We're not seeing any criminal actions or activity," Willits said.
