The official trailer for Sony Pictures’ latest feature film, starring Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep, was released May 6. Titled Ricki and the Flash, the comedic drama focuses on a rock musician who risked everything to make her dreams a reality and has now returned home to her family to make amends.
The trailer opens with a transformed rock’n’roll Meryl Streep, Ricki Randazzo, decked out in tattoos, eyeliner, with one side of her head braided playing with her band, the Flash. She soon finds out that her daughter’s lover has walked out on her and returns home in hopes of helping her cope. In the process, Ricki’s faced with the fact that she missed out on her children growing up, not to mention she’s further confused with the love triangle between her ex-husband and one of her band members, played by Rick Springfield.
The soundtrack for the upcoming film was recorded in front of a live audience, including hits from artists such as Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Lady Gaga, Entertainment Weekly reports. In order to shred on the guitar like a Rolling Stones worthy musician, Streep practiced for the duration of six months, sometimes even making her fingers bleed. She literally worked her fingers to the bone.
The anticipated family drama is set to hit theaters August 7, with Streep and her real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, creating movie magic with their unbeatable and authentic mother-daughter dynamic.
