The long awaited announcement on whether or not Baltimore police officers would face charges in the death of Freddie Gray finally came on Friday.

Reuters noted that prosecutor Marilyn Mosby announced during a news conference that one of the officers involved was charged with murder and the five others have been charges with lesser crimes.

As previously reported, Gray was arrested and suffered a spinal cord injury, which then led to a coma. He died on April 19 and despite his family’s plea, the city of Baltimore erupted in violence the day he was laid to rest. Many other protests around the country also took place after his death.

"To the people of Baltimore and the demonstrators across America, I heard your call for 'no justice, no peace.' Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man," said Mosby.

The officers charged include Caesar R. Goodson Jr., who was charged with murder, Lt. Brian Rice, Garrett Miller, Edward Nero, William Porter, and Sgt. Alicia White, who are charged with the lesser offenses.

After the news broke, many of the city’s residents shared their reactions.
