Eight people were killed and another 200 were injured after a train bound for New York City derailed in Philadelphia.

CNN noted that the Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188, which left Washington D.C. Tuesday night, derailed in Philadelphia around 9:30 p.m.

The train was carrying a total of 238 passengers and five crew members when seven cars went off the tracks, a U.S. Department of Transportation representative said Wednesday.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter called the crash site β€œan absolute, disastrous mess.”

The injured were taken to several different area hospitals and officials said that many of their injuries were caused by objects and other passengers being thrown into them during the accident.

WPVI reported that by daybreak NTSB investigators had gathered at the scene to conduct their investigation as to what caused the derailment.

The accident closed down the busy rail corridor that extends from Washington D.C. to Boston.

Anyone seeking information about a loved who was traveling on the train can call the Amtrak Hotline at 1-800-523-9101.
