Authorities in Spain have said that an airport X-ray scanner uncovered an 8-year-old boy smuggled in a suitcase from Morocco on Thursday.
BBC News reported that the child named Abou, was found inside the baggage belonging to a 19-year-old woman.
ABC News noted that the boy was detected by a machine at customs in Ceuta and while he did not appear to be injured, he was very frightened when operators opened the luggage.
The Spanish news agency Efe said the woman carrying the case “seemed to hesitate, and it looked as though she didn't want to come through the border.”
Her suitcase was then X-rayed and that’s when the discovery was made.
The woman was arrested and the boy’s father, who later crossed the border, was apprehended as well. The father also named Abou, said he had recently applied for family reunification but was denied. Authorities believe he paid the woman to smuggle his son into the country.
The child is now in the custody of Spanish child protective services.
