Avengers: Age of Ultron easily scored a second weekend at the top of the box office and its challengers all had terrible showings. Hot Pursuit, the only major wide release of the weekend, was a total flop, despite coming in second.
Ultron finished its debut weekend with $191.3 million, earning the second-best opening weekend in history. This weekend, it dropped nearly 60 percent to $77.2 million. That brings its domestic take to $312.8 million after just 10 days.
The drop from one weekend to the second was bigger than the dive The Avengers took in 2012, but it was still the second-best second weekend ever, so Disney gets that as a consolation prize. It has also topped the domestic take of Captain America: The Winter Soldier already.
As Box Office Mojo notes, Ultron racked up another $65 million overseas, bringing the foreign total to $562 million. Worldwide, it’s up to $875.3 million. And it still hasn’t hit China and Japan.
Warner Bros.’ Hot Pursuit, which pairs Reese Witherspoon with Sofia Vergara, was a flop. According to Rentrak data, the movie made just $13.3 million. The film was hammered with bad reviews and the audience only gave it a C CinemaScore grade. Expect this one to be out of theaters really quickly.
The Age of Adaline added $5.6 million, while Furious 7 made another $5.3 million. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 rounded out the Top 5 with $5.1 million.
Hot Pursuit wasn’t the only disappointment. IFC Films was dealt a major blow with The D Train, a new dark comedy starring Jack Black. Despite opening at 1,000 theaters, it only made $469,000.
