Avengers: Age of Ultron finally opened in China Tuesday and while it was a record-setting day for Disney and Marvel, there was one big bump in the road.
Several sites in China have reported that audiences have been complaining about poorly translated subtitles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, in one scene with Captain America saying, “I’m home,” the subtitles read, “I’m good.” In another moment, Iron Man says, “We may not make it out of this.” But that is translated to “Run fast if someone tries to kill you.”
“The woman in front me almost cried and said let's go home, I can't put up with it,” a filmgoer wrote on his Weibo social media account.
The problem is that the subtitles are often too literal. That led some to suggest that the subtitles were done with Google Translate. However, the translator was Liu Gayong, who has worked on Avatar and Titanic.
Guardians of the Galaxy was also initially criticized for literal subtitles, especially since it was titled Interplanetary Unusual Attacking Team.
THR does report though that the subtitles for Ultron have since been fixed.
According to Deadline, Ultron opened to $33.9 million in China, doubling Iron Man 3’s debut in 2013.
Ultron is up to $607.4 million internationally and $324.8 million in North America.
