Brad Pitt is going to be back to fighting zombies again. The sequel to the surprise hit World War Z opens in June 2017.
Paramount announced on Thursday that World War Z 2, which will probably get a much better name soon, will hit theaters on June 9, 2017. As TheWrap points out, this would put it up against Fox’s Fantastic Four 2. That will probably force Fox to move the title, since putting two films with similar audiences against each other on the same weekend is a bad idea.
The first WWZ hit theaters in June 2013 and went on to become the highest grossing film in Pitt’s career. It somehow managed to fight off negative publicity, with stories about studio fights over the ending and concerns that the budget ballooned to $200 million.
However, right after the film’s surprise opening weekend, Paramount started work on the sequel and later hired J.A. Boyana (The Impossible) to direct. Steven Knight (Locke) is writing the script.
WWZ was based on Max Brooks’ novel about a zombie apocalypse told the eyes of a UN worker (Pitt) and his wife (Mireille Enos). Marc Forster directed the first film. David Ellison’s Skydance and Pitt’s Plan B are producing the franchise with Paramount.
