A Catholic priest has claimed he was fired after he made a Facebook post in which he supported gay rights.
According to the Washington Post, Rev. Warren Hall, who was a minister for Seton Hall University, had made a post on social media in support for the “NOH8” campaign, which supports gay rights.
In a tweet that has since been deleted, Hall wrote, “I’ve been fired from SHU for posting a pic on FB supporting LGBT ‘NO H8.’ I’m sorry it was met with this response. I’ll miss my work here.”
Seton Hall was founded by the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ. A spokeswoman, Laurie A. Pine, for the university said, “Seton Hall University does not comment on personnel matters. The Archbishop of Newart appoints the Director of Campus Ministry, who serves at his discretion.”
A Seton Hall Student started a position on Change.org in order to ask the Archdiocese to reinstate the Reverend. Hall tweeted his supporters to tell them he was “grateful” and to allow this situation to open discussion on these issues on campus.
NJ.com reported that a spokesman for the Archdiocese, Jim Goodness, said Hall would remain a priest for the Archdioces of Newark, but he will be under a different assignment.
