Those familiar with the ongoing investigation into the Amtrak train that derailed Tuesday night in Philadelphia have said that it was going more than 100 mph, double the 50 mph speed limit.

The New York Times reported that people close to the investigation have said that the train’s black box recovered revealed that it was traveling at least 100 mph before the derailment occurred.

As previously reported, the accident left eight people dead and more than 200 injured.

The Northeast Regional Train 188 had departed from Washington D.C. and was headed to New York, before seven cars went off the tracks at the Frankford Junction in Philadelphia.

The city’s Mayor Michael Nutter called the crash site “an absolute, disastrous mess.”

Those on board the train described a scene of chaos with objects and people flying everywhere.

At this time, authorities are still sifting through the wreckage and trying to locate a number of missing people.

Anyone who is seeking information on their loved ones can call the Amtrak Hotline at 1-800-523-9101.
