20th Century Fox has hired The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone to helm The New Mutants, another spin-off in the X-Men universe.
Boone is set to co-write the script with Knate Gwaltney, with Simon Kinberg and LAuren Shuler Donner producing.
“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters,” Kinberg said in a statement to Deadline.
Boone previously worked with Fox on Fault, which helped turn Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff into stars. The Fox 200 film only cost $12 million to make, but thanks to the author John Green’s fanbase, the film made $307 million worldwide. Since then, several studios have been interested in Boone’s services for projects like The Stand and even the Marvel/Sony Spider-Man reboot. However, his next definite project is Universal’s The Vampire Chronicles.
Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool with Ryan Reynolds are currently in production. Fox is also developing Gambit with Channing Tatum and Wolverine 3. So even if The New Mutants doesn’t happen for a few years, there’s a lot for X-Men fans to look forward to.
